| List | Next > Bus and train ride to Munich, hike to Hohenschäftlarn
The first leg of this trip started with a 5:15am bus ride from Luxembourg to Saarbrücken, where I took ICE trains to Mannheim and then to Munich. The total travel time was only slightly over six hours, and as such I started hiking shortly before noon.
Even though I'd made last minute changes, my backpack still weighed in at an entirely-too-high 15kg without water and food. Part of this was due to the fact that I'd decided that I wanted to take decent photographs, which meant that I didn't just take along my DSLR but also my laptop... since in 2004, memory cards were still expensive enough to make it impossible to store 28 days worth of pictures on memory cards alone while adherring to a resonable budget. My laptop only weighed slightly over 1kg, but it was still an addition I'd come to regret.
I hiked through Munich's pedestrian zone, over the Marienplatz square, then through the Isartor to the Isar river, which I'd follow for the next couple of days.
Around 2pm, I had arrived an Tierpark Hellabrun. From the trail, it didn't really look too spectacular, and after a short break I headed on. An hour later I crossed the Isar on Grosshesseloger Brücke, and as luck would have it a large raft - more or less a German beer garden on water, including musicians and everything - drifted by. I walked on, and by 5pm I had gone beyond the floodgate that meant I'd gone 15 km already.
Afterwards, I lost the trail and for a short while hiked through the forest in an attempt to get to the nearest road, and eventually walked into Hohenschäftlarn, looking for a place to stay.
The rest of the day was pretty relaxed - I had dinner at the hotel I was staying in, and then called it a night... I'd been up since about 4am, and was exhausted.
